Signs It’s Time to Break Up with Your Jeans

Do you remember the first time you saw your favorite jeans hanging on a rack at the store? When you tried them on, you thought “how did I live so long without them?” But it’s been a while since you’ve felt that way and you can’t put your finger on why. To aid you in the process of letting go, here are some signs that it might be time for you to move onto a new relationship with a new pair of jeans.

You fight publicly with your jeans
When you and your jeans first started dating everyone stared as you walked by because it was clear the two of you belonged together. Now everyone stares and you have the suspicion it’s not the good kind of staring. Maybe there are one too many rips in one too many places, or they clash with everything in your wardrobe, the point is that being in public with your jeans makes others uncomfortable, and others can tell you’re uncomfortable too.

You imagine yourself with another
While you used to think you had won the jean lottery, now all you think about is being with a new pair. How would they make you look? How would they make you feel? Maybe you’re fantasizing because you’re still wearing last year’s bootcut denim, or maybe they’re just not as good of a fit as they used to be. The point is, if you’re dreaming of being with another pair, it’s probably time to move on. No one likes a denim adulteress, so let the old go and embrace the new.

Your jeans make you feel bad about yourself
Once upon a time your jeans told you “you are perfect just the way you are.” Now when you ask your jeans if your butt looks big they suggest that tomorrow morning you order a skinny latte. Don’t listen to those negative messages! Your jeans are simply feeling insecure because their best days are behind them. You deserve a pair of jeans that treat you like the princess you are, so toss aside your acid washed pair and say hello to skinny jeans—or as I like to call them, the tall, dark, and handsome pair.

Your friends disapprove of your jeans
Remember when you were in college, and you and your best friends swore that if you started dating denim that the others disapproved of you’d chuck the pair to the curb? Go back to that girl and remember the bonds of sisterhood! Your friends have your best interest at heart, so if they’ve expressed concerns that your holey jeans with the tapered leg are dragging you down, you might want to listen.

You and your jeans had good times
When you and your jeans first met you did everything together. You took trips to the beach, slow danced, and sometimes you just stayed in and watched movies. Now when you take trips to the beach, your jeans stay in the hotel room, and when you watch movies, the two of you can go the entire night without saying a word— and not in a good way. Find a pair of jeans you can build new memories with and keep the old pair in the past where they belong.

Starting a new relationship can be scary, but don’t think about trying to build a relationship with a new pair of boyfriend jeans, simply end the old relationship. You’ll find the right pair when the time is right, and until then just remind yourself that you deserve the jeans of your dreams and wear your favorite skirts until you can look at the color indigo without bursting into tears.
